Largely due to the propagation of misinformation, the public raises what would otherwise seem a non-question, a non-sensical query: Is Mitt Romney Christian? Of course He is Christian, in the purest sense of the word. His life is centered in the gospel of Jesus Christ, and He does not believe salvation comes by any other name under heaven. Mitt Romney worships God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, and as other faithful members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (nicknamed “Mormons“).
Mitt Romney and other Mormons are clearly Christian
Though the LDS conception of Jesus Christ differs from other Christian creeds, so, too do they differ from each other. To apply the label non-Christian to Latter-day Saints (Mormons) or to Mitt Romney, would be synonymous or tantamount to naming all other Christian creeds that deviate on a point of doctrine about Christ, non-Christian. No one does that. They acknowledge the differences and accept the common ground–belief in Jesus Christ as Savior and Redeemer, belief in His redemptive grace and powers, belief in His Resurrection, belief that He lives and that He will come again.
How is that non-Christian. Calling Mitt Romney anything but Christian is a ploy of the adversary to keep those who know little about us from thinking that we worship Christ and Christ alone. It is to imply or suggest, deliberately or inadvertently, that we are founded on something mystical, non-Biblical, or otherwise extreme. Such is not true.
To suggest that we are controlling our image to display certain attributes of our faith in Christ or belief in eternal families, or to go mainstream, is simply hype and media spin. It’s how the world frames what it doesn’t understand. Our full name, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has long announced to the world where we stand. We don’t cower to societal pressure nor to caveats of the media. We don’t change emphasis or policy because of social currents or trendy times. The gospel of Jesus Christ and the organization He Himself restored and re-established in our day–The Church of Jesus Christ–is based on the revelatory will of the Lord Jesus Christ. When He speaks, we follow, and how that plays out in the bigger world stage is the by-product of that process.
As a lay member of the Church of Jesus Christ, I invite all responsible media to call it like it is. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Mitt Romney, are indeed, and supremely Christian. Those of other faiths are free to disagree with our points of doctrine about the nature of Christ, restored by Him, but our religious identity as Christians should not be up for grabs by them, lest they by this definition exclude themselves from that same designation–having a different conception of Jesus than He has taught.
